2027: Shekarau asserts that regionalism should not be the foundation for selecting a president

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, the former governor of Kano State, has made a strong appeal to Nigerians, urging them not to let regionalism dictate the outcome of the 2027 presidential election. He believes that allowing regional affiliations to influence electoral decisions could undermine the principles of good governance and effective leadership.

In a recent interview with Channels Television, Shekarau expressed his concerns regarding the potential dangers of selecting a president based solely on regional ties. He emphasized that such a practice poses a significant threat to the democratic process and the ability of leaders to govern effectively.

Shekarau highlighted the importance of focusing on candidates’ competence and their capacity to deliver on their promises. He argued that the choice of president should be based on qualifications and capabilities rather than regional considerations, which could lead to divisiveness and ineffective governance.

The issue of power rotation between the North and South has been a contentious topic in Nigeria’s political landscape. Daily Trust reported that this debate has significantly influenced elections, with many citizens advocating for a fair distribution of power among the regions.

As the 2027 general elections approach, there is a rising momentum for a power shift back to the North. This growing agitation reflects the political dynamics in the country and the ongoing discussions about representation and equity among the different regions.

However, some prominent political figures, including Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), have cautioned against this shift. They argue that the North should wait until 2031, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to complete his second term, before pursuing the presidency.

In light of these discussions, Shekarau stressed the need for political parties to establish a transparent and systematic approach to candidate selection. He believes that such a system would allow Nigerians to make informed decisions based on the qualifications and abilities of the candidates.

Ultimately, Shekarau’s message is clear: Nigerians must prioritize competence and capability over regional affiliations in the upcoming election. By doing so, they can ensure that the most suitable individual is chosen to lead the country and uphold the values of good governance.
