5 strategies for managing wealth after retirement in Nigeria

Are you a retired individual in Nigeria who finds that your retirement lifestyle falls short of your expectations? Have you realized that your meticulously planned retirement program is unable to support you a few years later, leaving you puzzled about what went wrong?

The key to managing your wealth after retirement is to have a well-thought-out plan. This article will provide you with five strategies to effectively manage your finances during your retirement years.

Consider working part-time

Retirement should not mean completely stopping work but rather transitioning to a part-time or remote job. The common mistake retirees make is relying solely on their pension or savings and continuing to spend as they did during their active career, which can quickly deplete their resources. By engaging in a part-time job, retirees can better manage their savings, stay informed, and keep their minds active. Additionally, the supplemental income from a part-time job can cover some expenses, and the flexible hours allow for a more balanced lifestyle.
You can choose to teach or work in retail, whichever is more convenient for you, and build a network. By doing this, you will connect with people who may require your services or expertise.

Look for passive income opportunities

Passive income is earnings from investments or business ventures that require minimal effort to maintain. While still employed, ensure you have a passive income stream, and if not, seek investments that generate returns. Many retirees rely on this, allowing them to live comfortably. Retired landlords in Lagos, for example, depend on rental income, sometimes using strategies like tenant turnover or rent increases to generate lump sums when needed. This will enable you to reduce reliance on the money saved during your active days at work and it allows for more leisure time or the ability to pursue other interests.

Overseeing your retirement expenditures

The way you spend during retirement is crucial in managing your wealth. It’s important, to be honest with yourself and avoid unnecessary or extravagant spending if you want to effectively manage your finances. Create a detailed budget that identifies all your income sources, including your pension, passive income, and part-time work, and categorize your monthly expenses. At this stage, prioritize your needs over your wants and strive to remain debt-free.

Use the 4% rule

The 4% rule is a prudent guideline for withdrawing from retirement savings to ensure they last at least 30 years, as it limits annual withdrawals to 4% of the total savings.

Downsize your home.

After retirement, it is advisable to downsize to a smaller property to reduce expenses. If you own a property, consider renting it out and moving to a more manageable home. Maintaining an extravagant lifestyle can be costly, so it is prudent to be mindful of expenses. If you are a tenant, this is not the ideal time to move to a lavish house. Instead, consider relocating to a more affordable apartment where you can still live comfortably.
