Ahead of the off-cycle governorship election scheduled for November 16 in Ondo State, the Nigerian Navy has taken proactive measures by deploying gunboats. This initiative aims to protect sensitive election materials and personnel navigating the state’s waterways, particularly in riverine areas. The deployment underscores the Navy’s commitment to maintaining security during this critical electoral period.
Captain Aliyu Usman, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda, emphasized that patrols across the waterways will intensify on election day. These patrols will cover riverine communities and boundary areas, ensuring that all routes are secure. The focus on these regions highlights the Navy’s role in safeguarding the electoral process.
Usman also pointed out the significance of securing maritime routes used for transporting staff and materials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to polling centers. This logistical support is vital for facilitating a smooth election process, especially in areas where land access may be limited. The Navy’s involvement is crucial in ensuring that these materials reach their destinations safely.
In addition to the Navy’s efforts, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, has announced the deployment of 6,000 officers and personnel to enhance security during the election. This large-scale deployment reflects the NSCDC’s readiness to contribute to a secure electoral environment, working alongside other security agencies.

Audi assured the public that the NSCDC is fully prepared to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. The personnel deployed will include units from the host state, neighboring states, and the national headquarters. The NSCDC’s deployment includes specialized units such as the Special Female Squad, Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Agro Rangers Unit, and others. These units are trained to address specific security challenges that may arise during the electoral process, thereby enhancing overall safety and security.
Furthermore, the police have also announced significant security measures, deploying 22,239 officers to oversee the election. As the chief security agency for the polls, the police play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, ensuring that the election is conducted without incidents that could disrupt the democratic process.
