The Kano business community has established an ad-hoc security operations committee to ensure the safety and security of markets and business premises during the upcoming nationwide peaceful protest. The committee, comprising 20 members, was inaugurated during an emergency meeting of prominent businessmen and representatives from major markets and supermarkets. The meeting was convened under the leadership of Alhaji Sabi’u Bako and chaired by Alhaji Bature Abdul Aziz, Chairman of the National Harmonize Traders Union.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, Alhaji Balarabe Tatari, Chairman of the Kantin Kwari Market Traders Association, urged young people to refrain from engaging in any activities that could disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the state.
He emphasized that while the protest is expected to be peaceful, it is crucial to take measures to protect Kano, being the commercial hub of the region. He warned that bad elements might infiltrate and turn the protest into an opportunity for looting and destruction of properties.
Alhaji Tatari stressed that business owners have a responsibility to protect the lives and properties of their members, and therefore, must put in place modalities to achieve this objective. He appealed to the youth to shun violence, embrace dialogue, and avoid engaging in unethical acts, reminding them that Kano is their home and any attempt to make it uninhabitable would lead to unforeseen consequences.The Managing Director of the Kantin Kwari Textile Market Management Board, Alhaji Hamisu Saadu Dogon Nama, explained that the meeting was organized to share ideas on how to protect their markets. He called on traders and other business owners at Kantin Kwari to comply with directives and contribute their quota in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere.
Similarly, the Managing Director of Sabon Gari Galadima and Singa Markets, Alhaji Abdullahi, appealed to the public, especially the youth, to prioritize the interest of Kano and work together to promote the state. He disclosed that they have contacted the Nigeria Police Force, local security, and relevant stakeholders regarding the need for security around the markets. He also urged members to come out on the day of the protest to protect their business premises.
