OpenAI has announced that it currently has no plans to create an API (Application Programming Interface) for Sora, its artificial intelligence model that can create fairly realistic videos based on text descriptions or reference images.
During a recent “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) session, where members of OpenAI’s development team answered questions from the public, Romain Huet, who leads the developer experience team at OpenAI, confirmed that there are no immediate plans for a Sora API. He stated, “We don’t have plans for a Sora API yet.”
One of the main reasons for this decision seems to be related to capacity issues. After launching Sora, OpenAI had to stop accepting new applications for its video creation and editing tool because there were far more users interested than they had anticipated. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged this overwhelming demand on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), apologizing for the inconvenience. He mentioned, “We significantly underestimated demand for Sora. It’s going to take a while to get everyone access. Trying to figure out how to do it as fast as possible!”
Recently, OpenAI did start accepting new sign-ups for Sora again, but the lack of an API means that developers cannot easily integrate Sora’s capabilities into their own applications or services.
This decision not to prioritize an API for Sora may put OpenAI at a disadvantage compared to its main competitor, Google. Google recently launched an API for its own video generation model called Veo, which was made available to a limited number of users in early December. They also announced that a new version of Veo, called Veo 2, which has gained popularity for producing high-quality videos, is expected to have an API available sometime in 2025.

In addition, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has already released an API for its new video model called Nova Reel, and several startups that focus on generative video technology are also providing APIs for their models. For instance, a company named Runway claims that its API has been utilized by some of the largest consumer technology companies to consistently generate millions of videos for their users.
In summary, while OpenAI’s Sora model shows great potential for video creation, the lack of an API and the recent challenges with user demand may hinder its accessibility and competitive edge in the rapidly evolving field of AI video generation.
