A 32-year-old banker in Lagos takes his own life due to struggles and a grim outlook on the future

On Monday, a heavy cloud of despair enveloped one of the first-generation banks in Lagos state after an employee took her own life, leaving her colleagues and family in a state of deep reflection and sorrow. The lifeless body of the deceased, identified as Amarachi Ugochukwu, was discovered on the floor of the bank’s restroom.

A suicide note and a small empty bottle of insecticide, commonly known as a sniper, which she was believed to have ingested, were discovered on the restroom floor. Amarachi, who worked in Marketing, reportedly left her workstation around noon on January 8, 2024, to go to the bathroom.

When Amarachi took longer than usual in the restroom, her extended absence raised concerns. Her phone was repeatedly called, but it rang unanswered as she hadn’t taken it with her. Apprehension grew, leading her colleagues to search for her on the premises. One colleague checked the restroom, only to find the door locked from the inside. Concern escalated when multiple knocks were met with silence. When the door was finally forced open, she was discovered motionless on the floor.

In the suicide note she left, she expressed feelings of ongoing hardship, poor decisions, and a bleak future. The 2024 diary containing the note included the following message: “Nothing is working in my life. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all; I see extreme hardship, and I can’t bear the pain anymore. I’m sorry, Mom, I’m sorry, Dad…” She also apologized to five other individuals by name and concluded the note with, “Dear Lord, have mercy on me.”

Her colleagues reported that a doctor, who was called to the scene, confirmed her death. A team of policemen from the Ikorodu division arrived after receiving the information and transported the body to Ikorodu General Hospital for an autopsy. Police sources indicated that the deceased’s family had been contacted. Attempts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hudenyi, regarding the incident, were unsuccessful, but sources confirmed that an investigation had commenced.
