‘A new phase begins’, Farouk Lawan states as he departs Kuje Prison

Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has recently regained his freedom from the Kuje Custodial Center in Abuja. This significant development was announced in a statement he personally signed on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. His release marks a pivotal moment in his life following a tumultuous period.

In his statement, Lawan expressed profound gratitude, stating, “Alhamdulillah Alhamdulillah Alhamdulillah.” He emphasized that this day symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter for him. With a heart full of thankfulness, he acknowledged the support of Allah SWT throughout his trials.

Lawan conveyed his appreciation for being alive, in good health, and in high spirits. He expressed eagerness to reunite with his family, friends, and associates, emphasizing that he does not take this opportunity for granted. His words reflect a deep sense of relief and hope for the future.

He also recognized the unwavering support of his family and friends during this particularly challenging time. Lawan conveyed heartfelt thanks to those who stood by him, expressing a desire for Allah SWT to bless them for their loyalty and encouragement.

Previously, Lawan served as the Chairman of the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on the Fuel Subsidy Regime. His legal troubles began in 2013 when he was accused of soliciting a bribe of $3 million from billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. The bribe was allegedly intended to influence the removal of Otedola’s oil company from a list of those implicated in the fuel subsidy scandal of 2012.

Lawan was convicted on three counts related to the bribery charges, receiving a sentence of five years for each of the first two counts and seven years for the last, all to run concurrently. His conviction was a significant moment in Nigerian politics, highlighting issues of corruption within the government.

However, following an appeal, the Court of Appeal in Abuja found that the prosecution had not sufficiently proven that Lawan had demanded or agreed to accept the bribe from Otedola. As a result, the court reduced his overall sentence to five years.

Ultimately, Lawan’s release from the Kuje Custodial Center signals a new beginning for him, as he looks forward to rebuilding his life and reconnecting with his loved ones after a long and arduous journey through the legal system.
