A police officer was killed in Lagos

An unidentified Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Lagos State Police Command has tragically lost his life. This incident took place in the Agege area of Lagos on Saturday morning, sending shockwaves through the community and the police force.

The ASP was leading a team of officers to respond to an accident involving an Okada rider at WEMCO junction by Mobil road. Upon arrival, they were met with hostility from a group of irate commercial motorcyclists who were gathered at the scene.

Reports indicate that the police were there to evacuate a truck involved in the accident. However, the situation escalated as the riders demanded that the truck be set on fire, leading to a violent confrontation.

According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, the attack on the police team was unprovoked. He confirmed that the officers received a distress call around 1:40 AM regarding the accident.

Initial investigations revealed that the Okada rider had collided with the trailer at the WEMCO junction. Unfortunately, the rider succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident, which fueled the outrage among fellow motorcyclists.

As the police attempted to manage the situation and evacuate the truck, they were violently attacked by the gathered riders. During this confrontation, the ASP, aged 46, suffered a severe head injury and died at the scene.

In the aftermath of the incident, five suspects have been arrested, and law enforcement is actively pursuing additional individuals involved in the attack. The police are determined to bring all responsible parties to justice.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing tensions between law enforcement and commercial motorcyclists in the area, raising concerns about safety and the challenges faced by police in maintaining order.
