Nigerian movie actor Sanusi Izihaq, known professionally as Apa, has recently opened up about his journey in the Nollywood film industry and the challenges he has faced along the way. In a candid interview with actress Biola Bayo on the “Talk to B” podcast, Apa shared the pivotal role that fellow actor Ibrahim Chatta has played in his decision to remain in the industry.
Apa, who transitioned from a Continuity Manager to a full-fledged actor, revealed that he has encountered various obstacles during his career. One particularly distressing incident involved a director who had never met him but had only heard of his reputation. This director made threats against Apa, creating a tense and uncomfortable situation for him. Despite his eagerness to work with this director, the negative atmosphere led Apa to feel overwhelmed and emotional, resulting in tears.
During these challenging moments, Ibrahim Chatta was a significant source of support for Apa. He recounted how Chatta had witnessed him in tears on two or three occasions and took the time to inquire about what was troubling him. Apa confided in Chatta about his desire to leave the industry due to the toxic environment, but Chatta consistently encouraged him to persevere.
“Ibrahim Chatta has been a true friend and mentor. I would have left Nollywood if not for him. He always advised and motivated me when I felt like giving up,” Apa stated. He mentioned that he had contemplated leaving filmmaking on three separate occasions, but Chatta’s persistent encouragement and invitations to collaborate on projects helped him stay connected to his passion for acting.
