Hajiya Mairo Bello, the executive director of Adolescent Health and Information Projects (AHIP), has called on the government to create digital learning hubs aimed at empowering youths to become self-sufficient. This initiative aligns with the theme for this year’s International Youth Day, which is “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.”
She emphasized that as the world increasingly becomes a global village, it is essential for young people to acquire digital literacy. This skill set is not only vital for navigating social media but also crucial for their overall development and the ability to tap into their full potential.
In her statement, Hajiya Mairo highlighted the importance of youth involvement in various sectors, particularly agriculture, to ensure food security and actively promote peace and safety within communities. She pointed out that Nigeria, often referred to as the giant of Africa, requires the contributions of its youth, who are the leaders of both today and tomorrow.

She further explained that the UN General Assembly established this day on December 17, 1999, following a recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, which called for August 12 to be recognized as International Youth Day.
Reports indicate that each year, International Youth Day focuses on the challenges faced by young people around the world. Alarmingly, statistics reveal that half of the children aged six to thirteen lack fundamental reading and math skills, and childhood poverty continues to be a significant global issue.
