AI Chip Giant Nvidia Shares Fall Despite Record Sales
Nvidia’s stock has experienced a decline, even after the company significantly surpassed sales expectations, more than doubling its revenue. The AI chip leader reported an impressive $30 billion in revenue for a three-month period, marking a record high.
As one of the primary beneficiaries of the AI surge, Nvidia’s market value soared to over $3 trillion. However, analysts have noted a shift; while Nvidia has consistently delivered remarkable sales growth, the latest figures suggest that this pace may be beginning to slow down.
Analysts had anticipated sales of $28.7 billion for the quarter ending July 28, but Nvidia exceeded this forecast with a staggering 122% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite this impressive performance, Nvidia’s share price fell by 6% in after-hours trading in New York.
Market sentiment seems to hinge not just on beating estimates, but on the scale of the performance. Matt Britzman, a senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, remarked that the expectation for Nvidia’s results has reached such heights that even significant beats can lead to disappointment.

In announcing the latest results, Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, emphasized that generative AI is set to transform every industry. However, Simon French, head of research at Panmure Liberum, cautioned that raising expectations to such lofty levels necessitates sustaining extraordinary growth rates.
While Nvidia’s current AI chip, Hopper, is performing well in the market, the anticipated Blackwell chip has encountered production delays, which may have contributed to the stock’s after-hours decline.
Nvidia’s quarterly results have become highly anticipated events, often leading to a frenzy of trading on Wall Street. Reports indicated that a “watch party” was planned in Manhattan to celebrate the earnings announcement, highlighting the excitement surrounding the company’s performance.
Both Nvidia and Huang have emerged as prominent figures in the AI landscape, garnering significant attention and recognition. While this visibility has benefited the company thus far, it also raises the stakes for continued success in a rapidly evolving market.
