AI Software is a Game Changer for Social Workers

Artificial intelligence (AI) software has reduced the time social workers spend on paperwork by more than 60%, according to a recent trial.

The AI tool, called Magic Notes, helps by recording conversations and generating assessments. It was tested by 19 social workers at Swindon Borough Council, with highly positive results. The software allowed social workers to dedicate more time to meaningful, person-focused conversations with the people they support, according to the council.

Some social workers said the software made them feel more confident at work

Councillor Ray Ballman, in charge of adult social care, called Magic Notesa game changer.”

Developed by the UK-based company Beam, Magic Notes was used in 184 meetings between April and June. The pilot showed that the average time for conducting an assessment dropped from 90 minutes to just 35 minutes. Additionally, the time needed to write up reports fell from four hours to 90 minutes.

Social workers with challenges such as visual impairments, dyslexia, or English as a second language found the tool particularly helpful, creating a more inclusive work environment. Many said it boosted their confidence at work.

Ballman added that the council is now exploring how to further use this technology to support staff and improve care.
