Airtel Rolls Out New Tariffs Amid Rising Pushbacks

Airtel Nigeria has implemented a 50% tariff hike on its data and call plans, following approval from the Federal Government. The new pricing regime replaces the 1.2GB monthly data plan for N1,000 with a 2GB plan for N1,500. This move aligns with similar adjustments by MTN Nigeria, which also increased its tariffs recently .

The tariff hike has sparked widespread criticism from consumers, who argue that the increase is unjustified given the current economic challenges. Many Nigerians are already grappling with high inflation and reduced purchasing power, making the new tariffs a significant burden .

Telecom operators, however, defend the price adjustments, citing rising operational costs and the need to invest in network infrastructure. Airtel and MTN have emphasized that the tariff hikes are necessary to maintain service quality and expand coverage to underserved areas .

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged consumers to explore alternative service providers and take advantage of competitive pricing. Meanwhile, industry analysts predict that the tariff hikes could lead to a decline in data usage, as consumers may opt for cheaper alternatives or reduce their internet consumption .

In response to the backlash, Airtel has announced plans to introduce value-added services and loyalty programs to cushion the impact of the tariff hike on its customers. The company is also exploring partnerships with financial institutions to offer affordable data bundles through mobile banking platforms .
