Hyderabad: Prostate enlargement is a prevalent issue that affects many individuals. Traditional treatments typically involve medication followed by surgery, both of which can lead to side effects such as erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems, especially in younger patients. Rezum Water Vapor Therapy has emerged as a promising alternative for these individuals, according to Dr. C. Mallikarjuna, Managing Director and Chief Consultant Urologist at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU). During the launch of this treatment, Dr. Mallikarjuna emphasized its advantages—notable doctors from the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology in Banjara Hills, Dr. Syed Md. Furthermore, both medications and surgical procedures can result in sexual health complications, such as erectile dysfunction and ejaculation issues, which can be particularly troubling for younger and sexually active individuals. Rezum Water Vapor Therapy represents a significant advancement in tackling these challenges, providing noticeable results within 15 days to a month.”
The treatment utilizes steam, administered through injection, to target and reduce the excess prostate tissue that compresses the urinary tract. This minimally invasive procedure can be conducted under local anesthesia. The steam’s natural energy gradually eliminates the surplus tissue, with results becoming apparent quickly. Usually, just one session is needed, and in rare cases, a second session may be required.
A significant benefit of Rezum Water Vapor Therapy is that it does not lead to erectile dysfunction or ejaculation issues. Only about 10 percent of patients treated with Rezum may require traditional surgery within 10 to 15 years.
Patients with heart conditions or those on blood-thinning medications often encounter difficulties with prostate treatments, as these medications typically need to be paused for extended periods. However, with Rezum, the interruption is minimal, making it a safer option for these individuals. After the treatment, patients may need to take antibiotics, pain relievers, and may have to keep a catheter in place for a maximum of 10 days.
While Rezum Water Vapor Therapy provides significant advantages, it is not a comprehensive solution for all prostate problems. It may not be appropriate for cases involving very large prostates or complications related to the prostate. However, it is highly effective for young to middle-aged patients experiencing moderate prostate issues,” Dr. Mallikarjuna explained.
