Anambra Closes School Due to Bullying of a Seven-Year-Old Student.

The Anambra State Government has taken decisive action by ordering the immediate closure of Upcoming Star International School located in Awka. This measure comes in response to allegations of bullying involving a seven-year-old pupil, which reportedly led to a serious injury—a broken leg.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, made this announcement in a statement released late on Tuesday. She emphasized that the government’s decision was prompted by a report indicating that the pupil’s classmate was responsible for the injury.

During the investigation, it was revealed that when the school’s proprietor, Uche Onyeachona, was questioned, he acknowledged that the incident occurred within the school. This admission raised further concerns about the school’s operational status.

Chuma-Udeh pointed out that it was discovered the school was not authorized to operate under state regulations. This lack of approval has raised alarms about the safety and well-being of students attending such institutions.

In light of these findings, the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has instructed that the school be sealed by 2 PM today. This swift action underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of unapproved educational establishments.

The commissioner also took the opportunity to advise parents against enrolling their children in unapproved schools. She highlighted the potential risks associated with such institutions, which can jeopardize the safety of students.

Furthermore, Chuma-Udeh warned that proprietors of illegal schools would face legal consequences for violating state laws. The government aims to ensure that all educational facilities meet the necessary standards for operation.

Overall, the Anambra State Government is taking a firm stand against the existence of illegal schools, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children’s welfare and promoting a safe educational environment.
