APC declares Kano LG elections illegal due to a court order

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has declared the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, organized by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), to be illegal.

Rabi’u Bichi, a prominent member of the party, made this assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Kano.

He explained that the party’s position is based on a court order issued by Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano, which remains in effect and has rendered the election null and void.

Bichi noted that the judge ruled the KANSIEC leadership was biased and partisan in favor of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the state.

Since the judgment has not been appealed, the APC views any results from the election as illegal.

Additionally, Bichi referenced a recent Federal High Court ruling that annulled all NNPP chairmanship candidates for the elections, further supporting the party’s claims regarding the legality of the election.

He urged all APC members to exercise restraint and await the outcome of the legal actions the party is pursuing to contest the election’s conduct.

In response, KANSIEC chairman Sani Malumfashi asserted that the commission is operating within legal parameters.

He emphasized that every action taken by KANSIEC is procedural and that the commission is not politically biased.

Malumfashi also cautioned KANSIEC staff and ad hoc personnel against accepting bribes and stressed the importance of preventing underage voting.

He reminded politicians that practices such as vote-buying, thuggery, and other forms of violence violate the state’s electoral guidelines.
