Apple Might Update Find My To Allow Sharing Locations Of Lost Items

Apple is working on a new feature that will make it easier for people to help you find lost items like your iPhone, MacBook, or even things with an AirTag (a small tracking device you can attach to your belongings). This new feature is part of the Find My app, which helps track the location of missing items.

According to MacRumors, a website known for Apple news, this option was discovered in a test version of Apple’s upcoming software update, iOS 18.2. The idea is that if you lose something, you could share its location with someone who isn’t already in your contacts, like a taxi driver or an airline worker, by sending them a special link.

In this updated version of the Find My app, there’s a new button called “Share Item Location.” When you use it, you get a link that shows where your lost item is. This link can be opened by anyone, even if they don’t use an Apple device, so they can also help look for it. However, this link isn’t permanent; it will only last for a week or until your item is found and back in your possession.

There’s an additional option called “Share Contact Info,” which allows people to connect with your lost item. If someone finds your item, they can go to a webpage that shows your phone number and email address (if you’ve added those details) so they can easily reach out to you.

Right now, the Find My app already lets users share the location of their belongings with friends and family who are saved in their contacts. This new update expands that capability, making it easier to get help from strangers if you misplace something.

Also, users will be able to see how many different people visited the link to track the item, which gives you an idea of how much help you’re getting. Overall, this feature aims to make it even easier for you to recover your lost items with the help of others.
