Ariana Grande aims to clarify a common misconception regarding a lyric from the hit Broadway musical “Wicked.”
Grande stars as Glinda, later known as the good witch in “The Wizard of Oz,” in the film adaptation of the musical. She and co-star Cynthia Erivo, who portrays fellow witch Elphaba, have been actively promoting their new movie.
Recently, the film’s official social media accounts shared a lyric video of Grande’s rendition of the song “Popular.” The lyrics read, “I’ll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys,” but Grande corrected this in the comments. “It’s ‘ploys’ !!!!!! I love you @wickedmovie,” she wrote on the Instagram post.
This sparked a debate among commenters about whether the correct word is “poise” or “ploys.” One person noted, “I had to look this up because I’ve been singing the wrong lyrics for over 20 years. Some places list it as ‘poise’ and others as ‘ploys,’ but apparently the original CD booklet said ‘ploys?????’”
Grande isn’t the only one weighing in on this. Jennafer Newberry Peery and Ginna Claire Mason, both of whom have played Glinda in stage productions, sided with the singer. “Just another Glinda here to say…. proper ploys,” Peery wrote on social media, while Mason added, “The text says poise, but it’s proper ploys.”
“Wicked” is set to hit theaters on November 22.
