Betaworks Focuses On AI Applications In Its Latest Camp

Betaworks, a venture capital firm and startup accelerator, recently completed a 12-week program where they looked for new companies creating applications that leverage artificial intelligence (AI). They wanted to help solve a problem: even though AI technology has improved, people still find that the tools available aren’t very effective for completing tasks more easily or quickly.

During this program, participating startups received $500,000 in funding from a group of investors. The program culminated in a Demo Day, where startups showcased their projects.

Betaworks partner Jordan Crook mentioned that the accepted startups generally fit into three categories: AI tools for businesses, personalized software, and AI that works with hardware.

Here’s a brief overview of the startups involved:

  1. Unternet is working on a new type of web application that simplifies online tasks, like shopping, by reducing the number of tabs users need to open.
  2. Ursula is creating virtual characters for children that can show emotions, remember experiences, and respond uniquely to different situations.
  3. ESAI helps students create compelling college application narratives by guiding them in connecting their past experiences to their stories in an ethical manner.
  4. Autoplay develops AI tools that assist users in understanding software in real time, making it easier for businesses to adopt new technology and keep clients satisfied.
  5. Alice Camera offers a new type of mirrorless camera that connects to smartphones, making it simple to take high-quality photos while automating some camera functions.
  6. Dessn has designed a Chrome extension that lets product designers make updates directly to live applications. The AI writes the code for these changes, which developers review before they are published.
  7. Sarama creates a dog collar that translates your dog’s barks into insights about what they might need or feel, helping owners understand their pets better.
  8. Tato simplifies complex IT projects by automatically documenting communication and interactions (like meetings and emails) and sharing relevant insights with team members.
  9. Hopscotch Labs created BeeBot, an app that activates when users wear headphones and informs them about nearby locations and events as they walk around. The founders include Dennis Crowley from Foursquare.

These innovations aim to improve how we interact with technology using the capabilities of AI.
