OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, faced significant technical problems on Thursday, causing many users to have trouble accessing the service.
In the early hours of the morning, people began reporting that they couldn’t get onto ChatGPT, whether they were using it on the website or through other platforms. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, acknowledged the issue at 5:12 a.m. Pacific Time. They quickly started investigating what was causing the problem and figured it out in less than an hour.
By 5:43 a.m., they posted an update on their status page, saying that they were working on a solution to fix the issue. A little over an hour later, at 7:09 a.m., they announced that they had implemented a fix and were keeping an eye on the situation to ensure everything was working properly again.
On their website, OpenAI mentioned that they were still monitoring for any further problems. As of the time this article was written, the author was able to log into ChatGPT without any issues.

In addition to the problems with ChatGPT, OpenAI’s API (which allows developers to use ChatGPT in their own applications) also experienced downtime this morning. However, OpenAI indicated that they had resolved this issue as well.
It’s not common for ChatGPT to be down for long periods, but it has happened before. For instance, in December, both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s other services, including their video generator called Sora, faced significant disruptions. OpenAI recognized the issue quickly and began working on a solution, but it took them about three hours to get everything back up and running.
OpenAI later explained that the December outage was caused by bugs in a new monitoring system they had implemented.
