Chioma Chukwuka stated, “I studied Yoruba for a movie role.”

Nollywood actress Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha has shared insights into her preparation for her recent role in the Netflix series Seven Doors, which has garnered significant attention since its release. In this series, Chukwuka-Akpotha takes on the challenging role of an Igbo queen who is married to a Yoruba king, portrayed by fellow actor Femi Adebayo. The narrative intricately weaves themes of kingship, kinship, family dynamics, love, betrayal, and the quest for restitution, showcasing a rich cultural tapestry.

One of the unique aspects of her character is the requirement for her to speak fluent Yoruba, which posed a significant challenge given the specific dialect and nuances involved. In a recent interview during a television commercial (TVC) segment alongside her co-star Adebayo, she candidly revealed that she undertook the task of learning Yoruba specifically for her role in Seven Doors.

Chukwuka-Akpotha emphasized the importance of authenticity in her performance, stating, “I had to learn Yoruba for my role in Seven Doors. The Yoruba in the movie was not the regular one spoken in Lagos State, so I had to be very particular about the tone.” This highlights her dedication to accurately portraying her character and ensuring that the cultural elements of the story are authentically represented.

Her commitment to the role reflects a broader trend in Nollywood, where actors often immerse themselves in the languages and cultures they are depicting to enhance the storytelling experience. As Seven Doors continues to attract viewers, Chukwuka-Akpotha’s performance and her linguistic efforts contribute significantly to the series’ depth and appeal.
