On Wednesday, transportation commissioners in Nigeria raised alarms about the ongoing neglect of inland waterways across the country. They called for all relevant stakeholders to demonstrate the same level of commitment to this sector as is evident in railway, aviation, and road transportation. This plea came during a one-day consultative forum focused on safety and security in inland waterways, organized by the Nigeria Transportation Commissioners’ Forum.
The event, titled “Prevalent Safety, Security Hazards, and Practices in Inland Waterways: Passenger Transport Safety,” was hosted by the Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport. It aimed to address pressing issues related to the safety and security of passenger transport on inland waterways, which have seen a troubling increase in incidents.
In light of the recent boat accidents in Kogi State that claimed over 200 lives, the forum’s Chairman and Ogun State Commissioner for Works, Engr Gbenga Dairo, emphasized the urgent need for attention to inland waterways. He remarked that this mode of transportation has been largely overlooked, despite its potential to significantly contribute to the nation’s transport infrastructure.
Dairo pointed out that while there has been considerable focus on improving railway, aviation, and road transportation, it is now time to extend that same level of dedication to water transportation. He expressed hope that the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) would take its responsibilities seriously and act to enhance the safety and efficiency of inland waterways.
The commissioners expressed their willingness to collaborate with NIWA and other stakeholders to ensure that the waterways are safe for transportation. They underscored the importance of a collective effort to address the safety concerns that have arisen due to recent tragedies.
Moreover, Dairo suggested that local governments should be empowered to regulate and monitor activities related to the nation’s waterways within their jurisdictions. This would enable a more localized approach to managing safety and security, ensuring that issues are addressed promptly and effectively.

In addition to the commissioners’ statements, the NIWA representative, Olawale Tijani, along with acting GM (Special Duties) Mohammmed Dangana, reassured attendees that the commitment to build a jetty at Patigi, Kwara State, remains steadfast. This project was announced following the boat mishaps that resulted in approximately 107 fatalities last year, highlighting the ongoing need for infrastructure improvements.
The discussions at the forum underscored the critical need for increased investment and attention to inland waterways in Nigeria. As the nation continues to develop its transportation infrastructure, it is essential to ensure that all modes of transport, including waterways, receive the necessary support and resources to thrive.
