PE Energy Limited, which is a well-known company that provides energy services, has announced a new technology called the Multi-phase Pump and Systems. This technology aims to put an end to the wasteful practice of gas flaring and to help increase oil production in Nigeria.
The announcement was made during an oil and gas seminar held in Lagos. This seminar was organized by PE Energy in partnership with ITT Bornemann GmbH, and it focused on the theme of “Eliminating Gas Flaring and Reducing Costs in Production Fields; A Sustainable Approach.”
During an interview, Dr. Daere Akobo, who is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PE Energy Limited, explained that the seminar was designed to introduce this innovative technology to companies involved in oil and gas exploration. He emphasized that the new technology can help reduce harmful emissions, which are bad for the environment, while also increasing oil production efficiency. This, in turn, aligns with the global goal of reducing carbon emissions and achieving “net zero” targets.
Dr. Akobo highlighted the importance of addressing the issue of gas flaring, which is when excess natural gas is burned off during oil production and creates significant environmental problems. He mentioned that reducing gas flaring can not only benefit the environment but also improve the well-being of local communities and support the Nigerian government’s efforts to cut down on methane emissions, ultimately lowering the costs associated with oil production.
He also praised previous and current government efforts in developing the National Gas Policy 2020, which aims to transition from gas flaring to utilizing that gas productively and even commercially.
Mr. Jeroen Olde Monnickhoff, who is the Global Product Manager for Oil & Gas at ITT Bornemann GmbH, discussed how the Multi-phase Pump and System is crucial for minimizing routine gas flaring in oil production areas while also enhancing oil extraction. He explained that the technology captures the excess gas instead of burning it off, then pumps it to the production facility. This process reduces air pressure and allows for an increase in oil production.
Olde Monnickhoff also pointed out that this technology has been successfully used in various markets around the world, and he encouraged industry players to adopt it. He underscored that using this technology is a better option than continuing to flare gas, especially with the potential penalties for flaring and the health risks it poses to communities.
