Nigerian music star Davido has advised African Americans who are thinking about moving to Africa, pointing out economic hardships and systemic issues. In an interview on the Big Homies House podcast, the Afrobeats sensation expressed his worries regarding the increasing interest of Black Americans in relocating to the continent.
Davido highlighted that while Africa has its allure, the current economic situation makes it a less appealing choice for relocation. Using Nigeria as a case in point, he stated, “It’s not cool back home. The economy is in shambles right now.”
He pointed out the challenges faced by Nigerians, illustrating the irony of locals paying high prices for domestically produced oil while those importing it pay less. This, he noted, reflects the systemic inefficiencies that impact daily life in Africa. “For us Nigerians, the exchange rate is messed up, and oil prices are too high. It’s absurd that a country producing oil pays more for it than importing nations. We don’t have the best leaders, and that’s a fact,” he added.
However, Davido clarified that his comments were not meant to undermine Africa. Instead, he sought to present a balanced view, recognizing the continent’s increasing global appeal due to its flourishing entertainment industry, which he referred to as a “smokescreen” that conceals deeper issues. “My goal is to highlight the positives while leaving the slums out of the picture,” he explained.
His remarks have generated mixed reactions online, with some praising his candidness and others questioning whether his message could deter potential investors or connections from the diaspora. The Timeless artist is well-known for his pride in African culture and heritage, often using his platform to celebrate the continent’s vibrancy while advocating for progress and reform.
