DeepSeek Hits Top Spot On US PlayStore

A Chinese artificial intelligence lab called DeepSeek has recently launched an Android app that has quickly become the most popular app on the Google Play Store. This success comes just a few days after their chatbot app reached the top of the Apple App Store as well.

According to a company that tracks app performance called AppFigures, since DeepSeek’s app was released in mid-January, it has been downloaded over 1.2 million times on the Google Play Store and more than 1.9 million times on the Apple App Store worldwide. It’s important to note that the actual number of downloads might be even higher, as the Play Store indicates that DeepSeek has surpassed 5 million downloads.

The swift rise of DeepSeek’s popularity can be attributed to their release of several open-source AI models, which are seen as strong competitors to those created by well-known AI companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google. Interestingly, DeepSeek claims that they were able to train their AI models at a much lower cost compared to these other companies and did so using less advanced AI technology.

DeepSeek’s app works similarly to ChatGPT, which is a popular AI chatbot. It is powered by DeepSeek’s own AI model called V3. Users can interact with the bot to analyze documents, ask questions, and gather information from the internet. The app is free to use and allows users to upload files and keep their chat history synchronized across different devices.

While DeepSeek is currently leading in app downloads, they face a significant challenge if they want to maintain a long-term advantage over ChatGPT. To do this, they will need to attract 300 million users each week, which is a tall order.

In the past few days, both DeepSeek and its AI models have garnered a lot of interest from the tech industry. Some startups, like Perplexity and Gloo (which is led by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger), are already looking to incorporate DeepSeek’s technology into their own services.
