Enugu: Time to End Tanker Explosions in Nigeria – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed his condolences to the people and government of Enugu State following a tragic fuel tanker fire that resulted in the loss of lives. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by tanker accidents, which have become increasingly frequent in Nigeria. Shettima emphasized that it is imperative to take decisive action to prevent such avoidable tragedies from occurring in the future.

The fuel tanker incident occurred on Saturday along the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, where the vehicle veered off course and erupted into flames. This catastrophic event not only claimed lives but also left many others injured, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures on Nigerian roads.

The vice president’s heartfelt message was conveyed through his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, who underscored the government’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue.

In his statement, Shettima conveyed his deep sorrow over the loss of life and the injuries sustained by victims of the explosion. He noted that President Bola Tinubu shares his concerns regarding the increasing frequency of tanker explosions, particularly in public areas and residential neighborhoods. The vice president’s remarks reflect a broader acknowledgment of the need for systemic changes to enhance road safety and prevent future accidents.

Shettima highlighted that President Tinubu is particularly troubled by the recurring nature of these incidents, which are often avoidable with proper regulations and enforcement. In light of this, the president has directed relevant agencies to take immediate action to mitigate the risks associated with tanker transportation. The vice president assured Nigerians that the government is committed to implementing measures aimed at curbing tanker accidents on public roads.

To address the issue effectively, Shettima indicated that the government would collaborate with various agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

This partnership aims to explore potential strategies for improving road safety standards and ensuring that transportation ministries at both federal and state levels work together cohesively. The goal is to create a safer environment for all road users and prevent further tragedies.

The government’s commitment to addressing these challenges, as articulated by Vice President Shettima, is a positive step toward safeguarding the lives of citizens and ensuring that the roads are safe for everyone.

As the nation mourns the victims of this tragedy, it is essential for all stakeholders to come together and work towards a future free from the threat of tanker explosions.
