The European Union (EU) and the German Government have initiated the third phase of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), aimed at enhancing investments in renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and promoting rural electrification. This new phase of the programme is backed by a fund of €17.9 million.
The primary goal of this initiative is to provide electricity access to 1,500 individuals, while also ensuring that 30,000 people gain access to clean cooking gas. Additionally, the programme aims to generate eight megawatts of electricity, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s energy landscape.
The NESP was first launched in 2013 as a technical assistance initiative, co-funded by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It has been implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Power (FMP).
During the launch event and steering committee meeting for NESP III, the Head of Section for Green and Digital Economy at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS emphasized that achieving a cleaner energy future requires the active participation of all stakeholders involved.
The EU has consistently supported the Nigerian government in its efforts to secure energy resources and develop a sustainable energy future. This includes increasing the proportion of renewable energy in Nigeria’s electricity mix.

The EU representative expressed satisfaction with the additional funding for the third phase of the programme. This funding aims to continue the development of various frameworks and innovative models, which are essential for attracting renewable energy investments.
Moreover, the programme seeks to reshape the concept of electricity franchising, ensuring reliable power supply to beneficiaries while fostering a new investment landscape in the renewable energy sector.
Johannes Lehne, the Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, reiterated Germany’s commitment to Nigeria’s energy transition targets. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving these goals.
Both representatives stressed that the advancement of technologies and investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency will be crucial for diversifying Nigeria’s energy sources and enhancing energy security.
