Europe Seeks Feedback On Forbidden AI Uses

The European Union (EU) is working on creating guidelines to help everyone understand and follow a new law about artificial intelligence (AI). To do this, they are asking for feedback from different groups of people, and they’re holding a consultation that anyone can participate in.

They are focusing on two main areas:

  1. Defining AI Systems: The EU wants to clarify what counts as an AI system in their law. They are trying to differentiate AI from simpler, traditional software that doesn’t use advanced technology. To achieve this, they are asking for opinions from people in the AI industry, businesses, universities, and nonprofit organizations. They want to know if the important parts of their definition make sense and if there are any examples of software that shouldn’t be considered AI under their law.
  2. Banned Uses of AI: The new law also identifies certain ways AI can be used that are completely unacceptable because they pose too high a risk. One example of a banned use is a social scoring system similar to what’s used in China. Most of the consultation will focus on these prohibited uses. The EU is looking for detailed feedback about each of these banned applications, and they are especially interested in real-life examples that illustrate why these uses should be avoided.

The consultation is open for input until December 11, 2024. After that, the EU plans to release their guidelines on what counts as an AI system and which uses of AI are banned in early 2025, according to a press release.
