FAAN – 30 Airport Offenders Caught Daily.

FAAN The Director of Aviation Security Services at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has revealed that daily, between 20 and 30 individuals breach airport regulations by trespassing through the perimeter fences. Afegbai Igbafe, the AVSEC chief and a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, emphasized that this situation has prompted the collaboration of security operatives and the recent initiation of joint operations with military forces to enhance patrols.

During a recent interview with journalists at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Igbafe expressed concerns over the state of the airport’s perimeter fencing, which has suffered significant damage from surrounding communities. He noted that the vast land of the airport has led to numerous encroachments, but efforts have been made to address these issues with the limited resources available.

To tackle the security challenges, Igbafe mentioned the implementation of nighttime patrols and the establishment of observation posts manned by AVSEC personnel. Additionally, joint patrols with military forces, including the Air Force, have been initiated. He pointed out that despite these measures, the ongoing problems with the perimeter fencing remain a major concern, as much of it has been compromised by nearby communities.

Igbafe highlighted the pressing issue of intruders, stating that as many as 20 to 30 individuals are encountered each night. He expressed frustration that when these individuals are handed over to the police, they are often released shortly thereafter. To address this, the Legal Department of FAAN is working in collaboration with the Attorney General of the states to establish mobile courts, ensuring that such cases are resolved more swiftly.

In addition to Igbafe’s remarks, Henry Agbebire, the Director of Special Duties at FAAN, mentioned that both the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, have been actively working to improve airport infrastructure. Their efforts aim to enhance security and overall operations at the airports.

Agbebire’s statements reflect a broader commitment within FAAN to address the challenges posed by inadequate infrastructure and security breaches. The collaboration between various agencies and the military underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for a coordinated response.

As the aviation sector continues to face these challenges, the importance of maintaining robust security measures and infrastructure cannot be overstated. The ongoing efforts to revamp the airport facilities and strengthen perimeter security are crucial in ensuring the safety of passengers and airport staff alike.

In conclusion, the issues surrounding airport security and infrastructure at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria highlight the need for continuous improvement and collaboration among various stakeholders to create a safer aviation environment.
