Federal workers in 12 government offices might experience delays in getting their paychecks from October to December 2024. This is due to the budget running out for their salaries, especially after the new minimum wage was approved.
A notice sent to staff at the Voice of Nigeria explained that the delay is because of a special allowance that wasn’t included in the budget for this year. The notice was issued on October 22, 2024, and mentioned that the government will need to find extra funds to cover salaries for the last three months of the year, which will take some time.
The Director of Press at the Accountant-General’s office, Bawa Mokwa, confirmed that only a few specific government offices are affected, though he didn’t name them.

The notice stated that because the new minimum wage started in September 2024 and the special allowance wasn’t planned for, the budget for the Voice of Nigeria has run out. As a result, they expect a slight delay in salary payments while they sort out the funding.
Some staff members confirmed they received this information and mentioned that while some people have started getting paid, others are still waiting. One employee noted that they heard from colleagues that salary payments have begun but that the new minimum wage hasn’t been fully implemented yet.
Bawa Mokwa later said that the issue has been resolved and that affected workers would start receiving their salaries soon. He assured that the delays wouldn’t last until the end of the year.
