French Papers Demand Social Media Platform X To Pay For News Use

It’s not common for French newspapers to unite and share the same opinion, but some of the biggest names in the industry—like Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Le Parisien—have come together to take legal action against a social media platform called X. They made this announcement in a statement sent to news agencies Reuters and AFP.

In Europe, there are laws that require digital platforms (like social media sites) to negotiate and pay news publishers when they reuse news articles or other content. Recently, companies like Meta (which owns Facebook) and Google have reached agreements with news publishers in France to pay for using their content.

However, X has not been willing to negotiate with these newspapers to provide them with compensation for sharing their articles. Because of this ongoing refusal, judges at the Paris Court of Justice will now have the challenging job of figuring out how much value the short previews or snippets of articles shared on X are worth.
