Google Launches Gemini App For iOS Globally

On Thursday, Google introduced a new app specifically for its AI assistant called Gemini, making it available to iPhone users all around the world. Before this, people using iPhones could only interact with Gemini through the regular Google app or by visiting a website on their mobile devices.

The new Gemini app for iOS allows users to type questions or prompts in 35 different languages. Additionally, it features a function called Gemini Live, which enables users to have real-time conversations with the AI in 12 languages. These languages include popular ones like English, Spanish, French, German, and Hindi, among others. Google has indicated that they plan to add support for even more languages in the future.

While many of the capabilities of Gemini, such as getting recipe suggestions or help with studying, were already accessible through the Google app and mobile web, the Gemini Live feature is a new offering exclusive to the iOS app.

Users of the app can also create images using Google’s Imagen 3 model. Earlier this year, Google had temporarily stopped this feature for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users due to concerns about the accuracy of the images being generated. However, it has now resumed allowing users to create images of people.

Furthermore, the app includes extensions that let users ask Gemini questions related to other Google services they might use, like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Calendar.

Google first launched the Gemini app for Android back in February, starting in the United States and later expanding to countries like Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Over time, they have added support for languages such as Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese. By June, the app was also available in India and several neighboring South Asian countries, supporting nine local languages.

Interestingly, Apple is also working on integrating ChatGPT into its Siri voice assistant, with this feature currently being tested in the public beta version of iOS 18.2. At an earlier event this year, Apple announced plans to eventually incorporate Google’s Gemini into its own systems as well.

Craig Federighi, a senior vice president at Apple, mentioned during the event that they are looking forward to working with other AI models, including Google Gemini. The launch of the Gemini app on iOS could be seen as an initial move toward this collaboration between Apple and Google.
