Google Launches New Search Feature that Lets Users Search by Recording Videos

Google Unveils New Video Search Feature

Google has introduced a new feature that lets users search the internet by simply taking a video. This “Video Search” option enables people to point their camera at something, ask a question, and receive search results.

Starting at 1700 GMT, Android and iPhone users around the world will be able to use this feature by enabling “AI Overviews” in their Google app. Currently, the feature only supports English.

This launch marks another step in Google’s strategy to transform online searching with artificial intelligence (AI), following recent updates from other tech giants.

Building on AI Integration in Search

Google has been gradually integrating AI into its search functions. Earlier this year, the company introduced AI-generated responses to some search queries, though the rollout faced criticism for inaccuracies, such as a suggestion to use “non-toxic glue” to make cheese stick to pizza. Google has since worked on improving these results, with the feature now showing fewer errors.

Additionally, Google previously added AI capabilities to its Lens feature, allowing users to ask questions about images. This move has reportedly increased the popularity of Lens within Google’s app, encouraging further development.

Streamlined Searching with Video

Liz Reid, Google’s Head of Search, explained that the new video search feature will make it easier for people to find answers about the world around them. For example, a person visiting an aquarium could film a group of fish swimming together and ask, “Why are these fish swimming like this?” The AI will process the video, identify the fish, and provide relevant search results.

Industry expert Paolo Pescatore noted that this feature is a significant development for Google, as it demonstrates new ways of integrating AI into everyday tasks. “We are on the brink of AI becoming personalized and unique based on our usage patterns and habits,” he commented.

Additional Search Enhancements

Alongside video search, Google has rolled out other updates to enhance the user experience. The platform’s shopping results now include reviews and pricing from multiple sellers, providing more comprehensive information for online shoppers. Google has also introduced a new song identification tool, accessible through Circle to Search on Android, which functions as a competitor to Apple’s Shazam app. This tool allows users to identify music playing on their device or from streaming services without leaving the app.

Facing Growing Competition

These updates arrive as Google faces increasing competition from other companies in the search market, where it currently holds more than 90% of the global share. For instance, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, recently launched a new feature called SearchGPT, which lets users search by conversing with a chatbot.

OpenAI has been attracting significant investment, with its value reaching $157 billion following a recent funding round. These developments signal that while Google still dominates the search market, the tech landscape continues to evolve, and Google is adapting to meet the challenge.
