Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has affirmed that the Local Government Area elections scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) will take place as intended. This statement comes despite a ruling from the Federal High Court in Kano that opposed the election and dismissed the current leadership of the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, known as KANSIEC.
During a rally at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Thursday, Mr. Yusuf addressed a large crowd while presenting flags to candidates from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). He emphasized that KANSIEC had met all the necessary requirements to conduct the elections.
Yusuf pointed out that nearly all states in the federation have successfully held their local government elections, except for Kano. He accused certain “enemies of the state” of trying to undermine the electoral process.
He stated, “We have fulfilled all legal conditions and completed the necessary preparations for the elections on Saturday. Therefore, the polls must proceed as planned.” His remarks were aimed at reassuring supporters that the elections would be conducted smoothly.
The governor expressed confidence in the integrity of the electoral process, saying, “We are aware of plans by enemies of the state to disrupt this election, but with Allah’s grace, they will not succeed. The elections will be held peacefully and transparently.”

Referencing the late Rimi, he declared, “Uban kuturu ya yi kaɗan,” emphasizing the importance of conducting the elections as scheduled. He called on his supporters to come out in large numbers to vote for the NNPP candidates.
In contrast, the state’s Police Command, represented by spokesman Abdullahi Kiyawa, announced that it would not participate in the election as security personnel. This decision raised concerns about the safety of the electoral process.
In a video statement, Superintendent Kiyawa explained that, according to legal provisions, the police would not provide security for the elections. However, he assured the public that the police would be prepared to address any potential disturbances during the event.
The contrasting statements from the governor and the police highlight the tension surrounding the upcoming elections. As the election day approaches, the focus remains on ensuring a credible and peaceful process despite the challenges.
