The Federal Government has announced the adoption of 88 international standards for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) products to support the ongoing rollout of various CNG initiatives across Nigeria.
This move is intended to ensure the smooth implementation of CNG systems in vehicles and guarantee the use of high-quality products throughout the country.
Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), made this known in a statement released on Sunday to mark World Standards Day in Abuja. The event was themed “Our Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Changing the Climate.” Okeke emphasized that the celebration aimed to raise awareness about the vital role of standards in driving industrial growth and economic development.
Recently, concerns have grown regarding the risks associated with converting vehicles to run on CNG, particularly the dangers of explosions and other safety hazards linked to improper installation and maintenance. Several incidents involving poorly managed CNG systems have raised questions about the adequacy of safety regulations and the need for stronger oversight.

In response, Dr. Okeke assured the public that the government adopted international standards to ensure that CNG products in Nigeria meet strict safety and quality requirements, thus supporting the broader transition to cleaner energy solutions.
“Standards are crucial in achieving these goals and in facilitating the development of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices,” Okeke stated. “SON, in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda, has adopted 88 international standards for CNG products to guarantee the success of CNG initiatives in Nigeria.”
He further highlighted SON’s involvement in the Natural Gas Vehicles Monitoring System, a committee responsible for overseeing the implementation of CNG systems in vehicles and ensuring the use of certified products.
Okeke also noted that SON had conducted factory visits to countries like China and India to certify CNG components, prioritizing both safety and quality assurance. He reiterated SON’s commitment to supporting the global fight against climate change through standardization.
“As we address the challenges of climate change, we must recognize that standards play a pivotal role in successfully implementing mitigation strategies,” Okeke said. “SON is dedicated to improving life through standardization, fostering consumer confidence, and enhancing the global competitiveness of Made-in-Nigeria products.”
The statement concluded by affirming SON’s commitment to collaborating globally to align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring peace, prosperity, and a better quality of life for all. Okeke urged Nigerians to embrace international standards as they are the foundation of global progress.
