IGP bars Amotekun and vigilantes from Ondo election

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive barring the Amotekun and Vigilante Corps from participating in the upcoming Ondo governorship election. This decision comes as part of broader security measures aimed at maintaining order during the electoral process. The election is set to take place on November 16, 2024, and will see 17 political parties contesting for various positions.

In a recent statement, Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force spokesman, outlined the deployment of specialized police units to ensure the safety and security of the election. These units are crucial in managing potential threats and maintaining peace throughout the electoral period. The presence of these specialized forces is intended to reassure the public of their safety during the election.

Among the units being deployed are the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force, and Counter-Terrorism Unit. These specialized teams are trained to handle various security challenges and will play a key role in the upcoming election. Their expertise will be vital in addressing any disturbances that may arise during the voting process.

In addition to ground patrols, the police will conduct aerial surveillance using helicopters. This aerial support is designed to monitor the situation from above and respond quickly to any incidents that may occur. Furthermore, gunboats will patrol the waterways and riverine areas of the state, ensuring that all terrains are adequately secured.

Adejobi emphasized the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring a peaceful electoral process. As the date of the Ondo State gubernatorial election approaches, the Inspector General has assured the public of the police’s readiness to maintain order across all 18 Local Government Areas, 203 Wards, and 3,933 Polling Units in the state.

Comprehensive plans have been established to facilitate a smooth election. This includes the strategic deployment of sufficient personnel, resources, and advanced equipment. The police are focused on ensuring that all necessary measures are in place to prevent any disruptions during the election.

The deployment of officers from various specialized units will be coordinated with other security agencies. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of the security measures in place for the election. Adhering to the guidelines of the Electoral Act, 2022, is a priority for all agencies involved.

The Inspector General’s assurances come amidst concerns about security during elections in Nigeria. By implementing these measures, the police aim to foster an environment where citizens can exercise their democratic rights without fear. The involvement of specialized units is a proactive step towards addressing potential security challenges.

As the election day approaches, the emphasis on security underscores the importance of a peaceful electoral process in Ondo State. The police’s commitment to maintaining order is crucial for instilling confidence among voters. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the election is conducted smoothly and fairly.

The collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies will be essential in achieving a successful election. By working together, they can effectively manage any threats and ensure that the will of the people is respected during the gubernatorial election in Ondo State.
