Instagram Teases AI Tools For Editing Video Appearances And Backgrounds Using Prompts

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, recently shared some exciting news about new features that will be coming to the app. These features will use advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help video creators edit their content in innovative ways. In a video he released on Thursday, Mosseri explained that these new tools will allow users to change almost any part of their videos just by typing in text prompts.

The new editing tools will be based on a technology called Meta’s Movie Gen AI model. Mosseri mentioned that these features are expected to be available on Instagram sometime next year. He emphasized that they want to provide creators with the ability to fully express their ideas and creativity through their videos. For example, he said users should be able to change their outfits, alter the background of their videos, or even add accessories like jewelry—essentially, anything they can imagine.

In the video, Mosseri demonstrated some of these upcoming AI editing features. He showed how he could change his background to a snowy scene or transform into a puppet-like animated version of himself, showcasing the potential of these new tools. However, it’s still unclear if the editing tools will produce the same high-quality results for everyday users once they are officially released.

Back in October, Meta introduced the Movie Gen AI model, which allows users to create videos and sounds simply by entering text. At that time, they mentioned that this AI video generator would not be available to the public. However, with this new announcement, it seems that Meta is planning to use this technology to enhance the video editing capabilities for Instagram creators.

It’s interesting to note that Meta’s Movie Gen was introduced after similar AI models were launched by other companies. For instance, OpenAI released its own AI tool called Sora to select users earlier this month, and Adobe began allowing some users to test its Firefly video generator in October. This shows that the competition in the AI video editing space is heating up, and Instagram is eager to provide its creators with powerful new tools to enhance their content.
