Kano Governor initiates C-of-O recertification

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially initiated the recertification process for Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) within the state. This initiative is designed to establish a more efficient and transparent land management system. The move follows the introduction of extensive reforms in land administration, which includes the renovation of the Kano State Geographic Information System (KANGIS) and improvements to the administrative block of the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning.

In his announcement, the governor emphasized that this recertification will involve a thorough review of land records to ensure their accuracy and security. The goal is to protect investments and resolve disputes effectively. He has urged landowners to comply with the new regulations promptly to facilitate this process.

Governor Yusuf attributed the challenges in the land administration sector to the previous administration, citing issues of corruption, mismanagement, and failures in urban planning. He expressed a strong commitment to restoring order through reforms that prioritize accountability, innovation, and sustainable development practices.

A key component of these reforms is the implementation of a modern Geographic Information System (GIS). This technology aims to enhance land management processes, improve urban planning strategies, boost taxation efficiency, and reduce revenue leakages within the state.

To further ensure proper land management, Governor Yusuf has taken decisive measures, including the prohibition of inappropriate land allocations. He has also established a State Task Force on Development Control, tasked with addressing urban development challenges while safeguarding Kano’s cultural heritage.

The governor highlighted the comprehensive renovation of KANGIS and the facilities of the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning. These upgrades are now equipped with modern ICT infrastructure, which aims to enhance service delivery and reflect the administration’s dedication to professionalism and transparency.

Abduljabbar Umar, the Commissioner for Land, has urged residents to register their certificates of ownership. This formal registration is essential for unapproved residential and commercial structures, as well as informal settlements that have developed over the years in the state.

The administration’s focus on reforming land management is part of a broader strategy to create a more organized and accountable governance framework. These efforts are intended to foster trust among citizens and stakeholders in the land administration process.

As the recertification process unfolds, the governor remains optimistic about the positive impact these reforms will have on the state’s land management system. By prioritizing transparency and efficiency, the administration aims to build a more sustainable future for Kano State.

Overall, the initiatives led by Governor Yusuf signal a significant shift towards improved governance in land administration, with a clear vision for accountability and sustainable development at its core.
