The Kano State Board of Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) has launched a Mobile License Service Centre, which will operate as a Motor Licence Office (MLO). This initiative aims to enhance the state’s revenue collection and simplify processes for vehicle owners.
During the launch event, held as part of the KIRS day at the 45th Kano International Trade Fair, KIRS Executive Chairman Dr. Zaid Abubakar highlighted that the current revenue derivation drive led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is focused on boosting state revenue. This commitment has resulted in the introduction of various strategies designed to increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to support numerous government development projects.
Dr. Abubakar emphasized that this facility is the first of its kind in Nigeria, positioning Kano State as a pioneer in implementing such an IT-driven initiative. The service allows for vehicle registration to be completed anywhere and at any time, significantly easing the process for vehicle owners.
He further stated that this initiative aims to reduce the unforeseen obstacles that are often encountered during vehicle registration. By streamlining these processes, the KIRS hopes to improve overall efficiency and accessibility for residents.
In addition to the mobile service launch, it was noted that KEDC has disconnected ABU due to outstanding electricity debt. Furthermore, Nigeria has recently signed a €300 million agreement with France to develop critical infrastructure.
In his address, Malam Muhammad Abba Aliyu, the Executive Director of the Compliance and Enforcement Group at KIRS, described the state revenue service’s initiative as a bold step toward enhancing revenue generation. He expressed optimism about the positive impact this service will have on the state’s financial landscape.

Currently, KIRS has launched two mobile centres, with plans for additional centres in the near future. Aliyu encouraged other states to take inspiration from Kano State’s innovative approach to revenue collection and service delivery.
During the event, notable companies and individuals were recognized for their prompt revenue payments and effective compliance with regulations. This acknowledgment serves to promote a culture of accountability and encourages others to follow suit in supporting the state’s revenue efforts.
