Kano Offers Free Maternity Kits and Cesarean Surgeries for Women

The Kano state government has announced the provision of 6,000 free delivery kits to pregnant women each month across its government facilities. This initiative aims to support maternal health and ensure that expectant mothers have access to essential supplies during childbirth.

During an inspection visit to several hospitals, including Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital and Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, the state commissioner for health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, highlighted this initiative as part of the celebrations marking the one-year anniversary of the current administration led by Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Dr. Abubakar explained that the free delivery kits include vital items such as sanitary pads, surgical gloves, disinfectants, clamps, and other necessary supplies. This effort underscores the government’s commitment to improving maternal health care in the state.

In addition to the delivery kits, the state has also provided essential drugs and consumables for free cesarean surgeries for 500 women. This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing dedication to promoting the health and well-being of mothers and their newborns.

The commissioner noted that Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital has undergone rehabilitation, re-equipping, and refurbishment, alongside improvements to the accident and emergency section of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. Furthermore, Muhammad Abdullahi Wase and Yadakunya Leprosy Hospital have also received necessary repairs.

To enhance healthcare services, the government has recruited 36 House Officers and 70 Medical Officers to work at various health facilities. Additionally, health laboratories have been revitalized through the purchase of new equipment and reagents, along with staff capacity building. The establishment of a Project Implementation Unit (PIU) at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital aims to improve emergency medical services and ambulance systems, ensuring quality healthcare delivery across the state.
