Legislators urge CBN to tackle cash shortage

The House of Representatives has voiced significant concerns about the ongoing cash shortage affecting commercial banks across the country. This situation has prompted the House to call on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to take immediate action to resolve the issue. The cash crunch has disrupted various economic activities, leading to considerable hardship for many citizens.

This urgent appeal comes in the wake of directives issued by Vice President Kashim Shettima. He has instructed the CBN and commercial banks to swiftly address the problems related to cash scarcity. Additionally, he highlighted the need to tackle the arbitrary charges imposed by point-of-sale (POS) operators, which have further complicated the financial landscape for consumers.

In response to these challenges, the CBN took proactive measures last week. They issued a directive requiring Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to prioritize efficient cash disbursement to customers. This includes ensuring that customers can access cash both over the counter and through Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

The new directive from the CBN is aimed at enhancing the overall efficiency of cash distribution. By mandating DMBs to improve their services, the central bank hopes to alleviate some of the pressures faced by citizens during this cash crunch. This initiative is crucial for restoring public confidence in the banking system.

The directive took effect on December 1, 2024, marking a significant step in the CBN’s efforts to improve currency circulation. By focusing on efficient cash management, the CBN aims to mitigate the negative impacts of the ongoing cash shortage on the economy.

Moreover, the CBN’s actions reflect a broader commitment to ensuring financial stability within the country. By addressing the issues of cash scarcity and excessive fees, the central bank seeks to create a more favorable environment for economic activities. This is essential for promoting growth and development across various sectors.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how effectively these measures will be implemented by the banks. The cooperation of commercial banks in adhering to the CBN’s directives will be crucial in resolving the current challenges faced by consumers.

The House of Representatives’ call for action, coupled with the CBN’s recent directive, indicates a concerted effort to tackle these pressing issues. It is hoped that these measures will lead to improved access to cash and a more stable economic environment for all Nigerians.
