Mercy Chinwo has taken her former manager to court for allegedly diverting $345,000 in music royalties.

Mercy Chinwo Takes Legal Action Against Ex-Manager Over $345,000 Music Royalties

Famous gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has initiated legal proceedings against her former manager, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, alleging that he diverted $345,000 in music royalties. This serious accusation has led to significant developments involving the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Background of the Case

Following Chinwo’s claims, the EFCC filed a motion to compel Onyedikachukwu to appear in court. In response to the situation, a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Lagos State Federal High Court. Onyedikachukwu is set to be arraigned on January 24, 2025, for allegedly failing to remit Chinwo’s rightful share of music royalties generated from her online platforms and concerts.

Details of the Allegations

The EFCC detailed in an affidavit supporting the application that Mercy Chinwo had formally petitioned against her former manager. The commission noted that their attempts to apprehend Onyedikachukwu have been unsuccessful, prompting the need for an arrest warrant. Justice Alexander Owoeye granted this application on Thursday, indicating the seriousness of the allegations.

Career Highlights and Previous Issues

Mercy Chinwo gained prominence after winning the second edition of Nigerian Idol in 2017. Following her victory, she signed with EeZee Conceptz, a record label owned by Onyedikachukwu. However, reports surfaced in September 2022 that Chinwo had parted ways with the label due to disagreements concerning financial matters.

Implications of the Case

This legal battle highlights the ongoing issues of financial transparency and accountability within the music industry, particularly regarding the management of artists’ earnings. Mercy Chinwo’s actions could set a precedent for other artists facing similar challenges with their management teams. As the case unfolds, it will be closely monitored by both fans and industry stakeholders.
