Meta Urges California AG To Stop OpenAI From Going For-Profit

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is backing Elon Musk’s attempts to block OpenAI from changing its status from a non-profit organization to a for-profit business.

According to an article by The Wall Street Journal, Meta wrote a letter to California’s Attorney General, Rob Bonta, expressing concerns that this change could have a huge impact on Silicon Valley, the heart of the tech industry in the U.S. They urged Bonta to take action against this change. In their letter, Meta pointed out that Musk, along with Shivon Zilis, who used to be on OpenAI’s board, are capable individuals who can represent the interests of Californians regarding this issue.

Meta argued that if OpenAI goes for its new for-profit business model, it could lead to a situation where people who invested in the non-profit version would potentially benefit in the same way as those who invest in traditional for-profit companies. At the same time, the non-profit investors would still get tax benefits from the government.

It’s important to note that Meta has become a major competitor to OpenAI in the rapidly growing market of artificial intelligence (AI). Elon Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI but later departed from the organization. He then launched his own AI company called xAI and has taken legal steps to stop OpenAI from making this business transition. Zilis, along with Musk, is also part of the lawsuit against OpenAI.

In response to the situation, OpenAI released some emails and text messages involving Musk, suggesting that he should focus on competing in the business world instead of engaging in legal battles.
