Meta’s New AR Glasses For Research Can Track Your Heart Rate

Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has recently unveiled its latest version of augmented reality glasses called Aria Gen 2. This new product marks an exciting step forward in the world of technology, coming about five years after the first version. With advancements in features and design, these glasses are poised to make a significant impact in various research fields.

One of the standout features of Aria Gen 2 is its upgraded sensor suite. This means that the glasses are equipped with more advanced and capable sensors that can collect a variety of data. Additionally, Meta has integrated their custom silicon, which is essentially a special type of chip designed specifically for the functionalities of the glasses. This integration allows the glasses to perform complex tasks that can enhance the user experience and the efficiency of data collection.

Among the new sensors is a PPG sensor, which stands for photoplethysmogram sensor. This sensor can measure heart rate, a feature that could have several interesting applications, such as monitoring health conditions in real time while using the glasses. In addition, the Aria Gen 2 is equipped with a contact microphone that helps in distinguishing the wearer’s voice from background noises, making it easier to interact with the device or communicate while others are talking nearby.

Despite all these advanced features, the Aria Gen 2 glasses are surprisingly lightweight, weighing only 75 grams. This ensures that users can wear them comfortably for longer periods without feeling weighed down. The glasses also come with “force-canceling” speakers, which allow users to listen to audio without blocking out the surrounding sounds completely. This feature provides a more immersive experience while still maintaining awareness of the environment.

Perhaps most impressive is the battery life of these glasses, which can last up to eight hours on a single charge. For a device packed with so much technology, this long-lasting battery ensures that users can engage in extended research sessions or activities without needing to recharge frequently. This could be particularly beneficial in academic and commercial research settings where continuous use is essential.

Meta has announced plans to make the Aria Gen 2 glasses available to academic institutions and research labs in the coming months. This accessibility will open up new opportunities for various research projects, particularly in fields that can benefit from advanced augmented reality tools. One of the early testers of these glasses is a company called Envision, which is exploring how Aria Gen 2 can be used to develop solutions for individuals who are blind or have low vision. This demonstrates just how versatile and beneficial this technology could be in addressing real-world challenges.

In summary, the introduction of Aria Gen 2 represents a significant advancement in augmented reality technology. With its sleek design, enhanced sensors, and robust features, these glasses have the potential to revolutionize research processes and interactions in various fields. As Meta continues to refine and distribute this innovative tool, we can expect to see exciting developments that push the boundaries of what augmented reality can achieve.
