Microsoft Purchased Around 500,000 Nvidia Hopper Chips This Year

This year, Microsoft has made a big move in the tech world by purchasing a lot more Nvidia Hopper chips than its main competitors. According to a report from the Financial Times, which referenced information from a tech consulting firm called Omdia, Microsoft bought a staggering 485,000 of these advanced chips in 2024. To put this into perspective, Meta, another major tech company, only bought 224,000 of the same type of Nvidia chip during the same period. This means that Microsoft bought more than twice as many chips as Meta and that their purchases this year were more than three times what they bought in 2023.

In addition to buying these chips, Microsoft is also working on creating its own specialized AI chips, which they have named Maia. They revealed this project during their Ignite conference in late 2023, showing that they are serious about developing their own technology.

Microsoft has really focused on artificial intelligence (AI) this year. They have strengthened their partnership with OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI tool ChatGPT, and even took part in a massive $6.6 billion funding round for OpenAI in October. Furthermore, in September, Microsoft signed a significant deal to reopen the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, which had been closed for years. They plan to buy all the electricity generated by this plant for the next 20 years to help power their data centers, which are essential for their AI and cloud computing operations. Overall, it’s clear that Microsoft is heavily investing in AI technology and infrastructure to stay ahead in the tech industry.
