My dad believed I was a real troublemaker – Charly Boy.

My dad believed I was a real troublemaker – Charly Boy.

Nigerian singer Charly Boy has opened up about his rather tumultuous relationship with his father, former Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

During an interview on the With Chude podcast, the singer explained that his struggles with authority began at home as a child, particularly against his father, whom he never saw eye-to-eye with.

My issues with the status quo began at home. I often questioned why my father felt the need to dictate our every move—when to eat, when to pray, and so on. I grew increasingly frustrated with it,” he shared.

He voiced his dissatisfaction with the strict rules of the household, which resulted in frequent punishments from his father. “I was the one who received the most beatings among my siblings because I resisted following orders. My father seemed to forget that he instilled in us the importance of questioning everything, leading to constant verbal clashes between us.”

Charly Boy acknowledged that their relationship remained tense for many years, with neither truly understanding the other until they matured.

“I couldn’t grasp his methods, and he viewed me as a rebellious child who deserved harsh discipline. We didn’t really like each other until we both grew older and began to appreciate our unique personalities.”

“We disagreed on everything, which hindered my ability to connect with him. He didn’t know who I was, and I had no idea who he truly was,” he reflected.

The singer, known for being candid about his tumultuous relationship with his father, discussed this further during an interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast in February 2024. Charly Boy elaborated on how his father’s strong religious beliefs influenced his upbringing, initially steering him toward a path as a reverend, a role he later realized wasn’t for him. Ultimately, he distanced himself from his parents years later, feeling misunderstood by them.
