Popular Nollywood actress Stella Damasus revealed that her family’s original surname was Ojukwu before the Nigerian civil war. She shared this information during an interview with renowned media personality Ebuka Obi Uchendu.
In discussing the common confusion surrounding her name, ‘Damasus,’ she explained that her grandfather’s name, Ojukwu, was changed during the civil war to prevent attacks. The actress noted that her family’s name was mistakenly associated with the late Biafran war general, Ojukwu.
Ebuka remarked, “It’s interesting that so many people didn’t realize your surname wasn’t what it is now. Many were shocked by this revelation. Were you as surprised as they were?”
Stella replied, “Damasus is actually my granddaughter’s first name; it’s of Greek origin. My original surname was Ojukwu, but it changed during the Biafran war when my family was attacked in Asaba because people believed we were connected to the same Ojukwu. I was born into the Damasus name, and when I inquired about it, that was the explanation I received.”
