NERDC stakeholders convene to evaluate the education curriculum

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) is embarking on a significant review of the country’s curriculum, marking the first major revision in several years. This initiative aims to align the educational framework with Nigeria’s developmental aspirations, especially in relation to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Central to this review is the focus on the Senior Secondary Education Curriculum (SSEC) and the basic education curriculum. The goal is to equip students with essential skills that address contemporary challenges, such as entrepreneurship, technology, and global citizenship. This approach seeks to ensure that students are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the modern world.

The involvement of various stakeholders—including teachers, students, and policymakers—is crucial to this process. Their active participation ensures that the curriculum not only meets local needs but also incorporates global advancements. This collaborative effort is aimed at creating a more responsive and relevant educational system.

Modernizing education is a key objective of this review. It reflects the significant changes in knowledge, technology, and societal values that have occurred over the past 12 years. By updating the curriculum, the NERDC aims to provide students with an education that is in tune with current realities and future demands.

Inclusivity is another important aspect of the review process. The goal is to make the curriculum relevant to all Nigerians, ensuring that it caters to diverse backgrounds and learning needs. This inclusivity will help foster a sense of belonging and engagement among students.

The reform also emphasizes the development of entrepreneurship, ethics, and vocational skills. By focusing on these areas, the curriculum aims to prepare students for the challenges of a modern economy. Additionally, instilling moral and civic values is essential to shaping responsible citizens who can contribute positively to society.

This educational reform is part of a broader national commitment to improving education as a means of achieving sustainable development. By investing in the curriculum, Nigeria aims to enhance the quality of education and empower its youth to drive progress in various sectors.

In conclusion, the NERDC’s curriculum review represents a proactive step towards modernizing education in Nigeria. By aligning with global standards and addressing local needs, this initiative seeks to create a more effective and inclusive educational system that prepares students for the future.
