NIN: NIMC Approves FIC for ID Process

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has given the green light to FIC Professionals Network Plc to take part in a significant project backed by the World Bank. This project is called the Identity for Development Ecosystem Enrolment Service, and it aims to improve how identities are registered and managed in Nigeria.

In a publicly released statement on Thursday, Segun Shonubi, who is the Executive Director of FIC Professionals Network Plc, shared this news. The main goal of this project, known as the ID4D Project, is to create a secure and trustworthy digital identity for every person living in Nigeria. Achieving this would not only make it easier for people to access various services, but it would also lead to better governance and give a boost to the digital economy, creating more opportunities for growth.

The decision to allow FIC Professionals Network Plc to participate in this project came after the organization fulfilled all necessary requirements set by NIMC.

Shonubi also mentioned that FIC Professionals Network is a recognized group made up of stakeholders and plays an important role in ensuring that more people in Nigeria have access to financial services. Recently, they teamed up with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria to start a program that trains individuals to become experts in financial inclusion. After meeting the necessary criteria, FIC was approved for the ID4D program.

The approval letter from NIMC, which was signed by the Director-General and CEO, Engr. (Mrs.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, was dated January 23, 2025.

Shonubi emphasized the significance of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development project, calling it an ambitious effort to create a reliable digital identity system for all Nigerians. He believes it has the potential to transform how people identify themselves and gain access to services, which would be a major advancement for the country.

Additionally, in June 2024, the World Bank provided $45.5 million to the NIMC for this ID4D project. According to a report from the World Bank, this funding was released in several parts between December 2021 and April 2024, and the disbursement process is still continuing.

This project is also financially supported by other international organizations, including the French Agency for Development and the European Investment Bank. The collaboration aims to ensure a solid foundation for identity management in Nigeria, providing a variety of benefits to the population.
