NZ minister criticizes trolling of sunken ship’s female captain

New Zealand’s defence minister has taken a stand against what she describes as “armchair admirals.” These individuals have suggested that the gender of a female captain was a contributing factor to the recent sinking of a naval ship.

The HMNZS Manawanui ran aground close to the Samoan island of Upolu on Saturday night while conducting a survey of a reef. Following the grounding, the vessel caught fire and ultimately capsized.

Fortunately, all 75 crew members were safely evacuated onto lifeboats and rescued by early Sunday morning, as confirmed by a statement from New Zealand’s Defence Force.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of this incident and to assess any potential environmental damage caused by the wreck.

Judith Collins, New Zealand’s first female defence minister, stated, “A court of inquiry has been established to uncover the reasons behind this unfortunate event.”

She emphasized that one thing is already clear: “The gender of the ship’s captain did not cause this incident.”

Commander Yvonne Gray, who is originally from Britain and has a background in the UK’s Royal Navy, was at the helm of HMNZS Manawanui during the incident.

In an interview with the New Zealand Herald, Cdr Gray expressed that the situation represented her “very worst imagining” becoming a reality.

However, she commended her crew for their response, stating they acted “exactly as I needed them to” and demonstrated commitment, camaraderie, and courage throughout the emergency.

Collins expressed her dismay at the online harassment from individuals who criticize without understanding the complexities of such situations.

She remarked, “I find it deeply troubling in 2024 that people can sit in their armchairs, hiding behind their keyboards, and make vile comments about individuals they know nothing about.”

Collins further noted that women in military uniforms have faced harassment in public spaces in recent days, calling this behavior unacceptable.

“This is outrageous, and New Zealand is known for its decency. We are better than this,” she asserted.

The HMNZS Manawanui incident marks the first time in years that New Zealand’s Navy has lost a ship to the sea.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring that such incidents are thoroughly examined and that those responsible are held accountable.

The situation has sparked a broader conversation about the treatment of women in the military and the importance of respect and support for all service members.
